WE LOVE ZANZIBAR.

And a movement is born out of this love. Slow Travel Zanzibar moves against the ordinary, fast, shallow, and all-inclusive tourism experiences that are increasingly defining Zanzibar’s landscape.

It’s a movement aiming to educate, to inspire, to include, to learn, to progress and connect – travellers and destinations alike.

Slow Travel

the meaning of

Slow Travel is the movement of travelling through the world with intention and care. It’s the difference between just seeing a location and truly experiencing a place. Slow Travel honours cultural authenticity, preserves nature, and empowers local communities. It’s not about how many boxes you tick off – it's about how present you are wherever you go.

People • Planet • Progress

The four Slow Travel pillars are explored through the lenses of People, Planet and Progress. This foundation allows us to explore the movement inside-out. Through the people we meet, the planet we protect, and the progress we make together – as travellers and as a destination.

what we do

We believe sustainability is a never-ending journey – high peaks and low valleys alternate like Zanzibar’s endless changing tide. Members of our movement aren’t perfect and don’t claim to be. We can assure you however that they are committed – committed to invest in a type of travel that regenerates rather than deteriorates. We are not another sustainable tourism certification. Slow Travel Zanzibar is a non-dogmatic platform, promoting transparency, creating dialogue and bridges between travellers, destinations, operators and organisations.

How to practise Slow Travel?

Slow Travel is about immersion over sightseeing – staying longer in fewer places, using slower transport, and building real local connections. It means embracing spontaneity, discovering culture organically rather than ticking off tourist spots. The result is a more restful, sustainable, and authentic experience, for you and for the places you visit. Learn more in our Local Promise.

How to promote Slow Travel?

Promoting Slow Travel means shifting the narrative from volume to value – fewer visitors who stay longer and engage more deeply. It starts with designing experiences that reward presence, partnering with local communities, and honest storytelling. When promoted with integrity, Slow Travel becomes a powerful force for a more sustainable and equitable industry. Join the movement!
